Stanthorpe Vineyard

We thought it might be nice to give you a little bit of information as to
who we are & where we have come from...

In June of 2008, we came across an advertisement for Felsberg. A quick view on the internet convinced us that we should at least come and have a look. We’d spent some 10 years living in the Upper Hunter (near Denman) in a fantastic location and were not convinced that we needed to go anywhere however the opportunity you don’t investigate is the one you miss out on. Following a quick visit to the Granite Belt and inspection of Felsberg, we were hooked.

We sat down and discussed the hurdles we had to clear in order to make this happen and (to be honest) thought they would probably be too many and too high. One by one the hurdles were cleared, some planets aligned and we reached agreement with the seller. All of a sudden, Felsberg was a reality and (in continuing our honesty theme) we were excited and scared all at the same time. You don’t realize how much you have accumulated until you try to move house. One removal truck, one part semi trailer and 4 trailer loads later we were in!! The cellar door was open the next day and three days later a menu board was out and we were serving meals. From there, the hard work has really begun.

Chief organizer, cook, bottlewasher, band-aid applier, child ferry, accounts clerk and best all-round performer is Karen. With too many roles to list here, Karen takes all in her stride with enthusiasm and bravado. Every family has somebody in this role and we’re all glad it’s not us.

Samuel is No1 Son. Within a week of starting his new school at Glen Aplin, he went on an excursion to ‘Sea World’. QLD immediately became his favourite place. He does miss his friends from the Hunter but is making a whole new social circle doing whatever it is that 8 year olds do (we’re afraid to ask)? His dream to become a policeman has been with him for a few years now…..time will tell.

Darcy started school this year and in an amazing display of educational talent now knows everything already. In fact, he can’t really see the point in spending the next 12 (or more) years under the control of the education department. With a ‘bull at a gate’ attitude to life, we can see that he will probably get ‘somewhere’ but he will not really be sure where he is and will cause some damage along the way. He talks of being a winemaker but thinks that is what you do if you don’t go to school.

Peter turns the cogs in the winery and does other ‘stuff’. After 18 years in the wine industry plying his trade for others, the opportunity to set up a family business based on what he did best was too much to pass. As a recent graduate of a business Masters, he is supposed to know what he’s doing but he manages to pull off the image of making it up as he goes along just a little too well.

While Julian isn’t family by blood, he is an important member of the Felsberg family. Fortunately, he stayed on when we moved in and with a few years already on site he has been invaluable. As the Minister for ‘Parks & Gardens’ Julian keeps the vineyard in shape for us while learning the secrets of making wine. Apart from that he gets involved in anything and everything we throw at him. Having recently become a Father, he’s picking up a few other skills along the way.

No winery is complete without a repertoire of animals to meet and greet you. Our car-park wrangler is Bogart (a border collie) who has taken to life with his very own cafe with just a little too much gusto...his ever increasing girth is at risk of decreasing his flank speed to well below car catching levels. Misha is a Siamese/Burmese cross (Tonkinese) with a prissy demeanour. Definitely a princess, she may be approached but only touched by royal decree. Best to do what she wants, when she wants and how she wants as the consequences are too terrible to relate here. There are also 4 nameless goldfish swimming in the fountain and a coop of chickens off in the distance doing what chickens do. Plenty of mouths to feed our scraps to and lots of thankful love in return.

When you visit Felsberg you are more than likely to find one or all of us looking after you in the Cellar Door or Café. Now you know a little about us, you can at least arrive fully armed with the tools you need to understand our sometimes bewildering behaviour (Fawlty Towers aint nothing on Felsberg Follies). The Orr Family motto is... ‘Bonis Omnia Bona’ – ‘All things are good to the good!’ We believe in this wholeheartedly and we paraphrase this in modern terms by greeting and treating our guests to ‘another day in paradise’.
